MotoGP Argentina GP: Dominant Marc Marquez claims sprint win for Ducati

Marc Marquez took a lights-to-flag victory in the Argentina Grand Prix sprint race, maintaining his unbeaten record thus far in 2025.

The six-time world champion crossed the line 0.903s ahead of younger brother Alex Marquez, while Marc Marquez’s factory Ducati team-mate Francesco Bagnaia completed the podium.

It means the trio have finished inside the top three in every race of the 2025 MotoGP season so far and Marc Marquez leads the championship by 11 points ahead of Sunday’s grand prix at the campaign’s second weekend.

The race at Termas de Rio Hondo began in moderate temperatures, with teams trying to second-guess the weather as a fine drizzle fell minutes before the start.

But fears of a downpour had come to nought by the time the lights turned green, at which point pole man Marc Marquez leapt into the lead after a fine getaway.

Alex Marquez also started well and slotted into an early second on the Gresini Ducati. Johann Zarco, however, had a poor getaway from the outside of the front row and dropped to sixth behind Bagnaia as well as Pedro Acosta and Fabio Quartararo.

Despite Marc Marquez threatening to disappear as he built a lead over the first few corners, Alex quickly found a rhythm and settled in close behind the factory Ducati.

He remained within half a second of Marc for most of the race, raising hopes of a battle developing. But, with three laps remaining, the championship leader pulled the plug and stretched his advantage to nearly a second to put the result beyond doubt.

Bagnaia had established himself in his lonely third position by mid-race, by which point Zarco had worked his way back up to fourth after passing Quartararo and Acosta, both of whom quickly ran out of pace.

Bagnaia was too far up the road for the Frenchman to think about catching him to take a morale-boosting podium for Honda.

Zarco did, however, pull away from an intense battle for fifth, which featured several bikes early in the race but was ultimately a three-way fight won by Fabio di Giannantonio (VR46), who defeated Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) and Francesco Morbidello (VR46 Ducati).

Joan Mir aboard the factory Honda claimed eighth, while Acosta grabbed the last available point.

Quartararo rounded out the top 10, while notable retirements included Brad Binder (KTM) and Miguel Oliveira (Pramac Yamaha) following an incident with Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer.
